You may have already experienced the impossibility of getting back on your feet. On her latest album INITIATION, Sophye Soliveau deals with mourning. She writes about her shock at the time and the difficulties of recovery. ‘Leave’ is one of the album’s cornerstones and dives headlong into that pain and the regrets that come with it. ‘The things I wanna tell you / Let me show you what I’d do now if you were right here’. To compensate for such a tough subject, Sophye wrote a graceful suspended slow that rises high. She sang it for us with the ease of those who have been singing since their earliest childhood. Stripped-down of the dozen vocal layers and drum grooves of its studio version, the song shines just as brightly. Locking eyes with her bassist Eric, the duo unduluates between restraint and subtle tension. After a breathtaking climax – that final ‘You gotta go / I cannot leave’ might break your heart into a million pieces – the take we kept ended with a deep breath and the sweetest of smiles – one that speaks for itself.
